Introduction

Conwy Town Council is committed to recognising and encouraging the contribution made by young people to the community. The appointment of a Mayor's Cadet provides an opportunity to acknowledge a young person who has demonstrated commitment, leadership, service and dedication through their cadet organisation.

The Mayor's Cadet will serve for one municipal year and will support the Mayor at selected civic and ceremonial events while acting as an ambassador for both their organisation and the young people of the community.

Mayor's Cadet Policy

Purpose

The Mayor's Cadet Scheme aims to:

  • Recognise the achievements and commitment of local cadets.
  • Strengthen links between the Council and youth organisations.
  • Encourage civic participation among young people.
  • Provide the Mayor with ceremonial support at civic functions.
  • Promote the values of service, leadership and community engagement.
  • Eligibility

Nominees should be a serving member of a recognised Cadet Force, including:

  • Army Cadet Force
  • Sea Cadets
  • Royal Air Force Air Cadets
  • Combined Cadet Force
  • St John Ambulance Cadets (where applicable)
  • Be aged between 13 and 18 years.
  • Demonstrate a high standard of conduct and commitment.
  • Have the support of their Commanding Officer or Unit Leader.
  • Appointment
  • The Mayor's Cadet will be appointed annually by the Mayor.
  • The appointment will normally commence following the Mayor Making Ceremony.
  • The Cadet will serve for one municipal year.
  • A certificate and Mayor's Cadet badge will be presented upon appointment.
  • Attendance

The Mayor's Cadet may be invited to attend:

  • Mayor Making Ceremony
  • Civic Sunday
  • Remembrance Sunday
  • Armed Forces Day
  • D-Day Commemorations
  • Civic receptions
  • Royal visits
  • Twinning and international visits

Community events and celebrations

  • Other engagements as determined by the Mayor
  • Attendance is voluntary and subject to the Cadet's availability and parental consent where required.

Mayor's Cadet Role Description

Position Title: Mayor's Cadet
Responsible To: The Mayor of Conwy Town Council

Purpose of the Role:
To support the Mayor during civic engagements and represent both the Council and their cadet organisation in a professional and positive manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Mayor's Cadet will:

  • Accompany the Mayor to selected civic functions.
  • Assist the Mayor during ceremonial events.
  • Carry wreaths, programmes or ceremonial items when required.
  • Support the organisation and smooth running of events.
  • Welcome guests and dignitaries where appropriate.
  • Act as an ambassador for young people within the community.
  • Promote the values of their cadet organisation.
  • Maintain high standards of appearance, behaviour and conduct.
  • Wear the Mayor's Cadet badge when undertaking official duties.
  • Notify the Mayor's Secretary of any inability to attend a confirmed engagement.

Expectations

The Mayor's Cadet should:

  • Be punctual and reliable.
  • Treat all guests and members of the public with courtesy and respect.
  • Follow instructions from the Mayor, Mayor's Secretary or event organisers.
  • Maintain confidentiality where appropriate.
  • Represent the Council and cadet organisation positively at all times.
